VINCENT SCOOPS FBC ZIMBABWE AMATEUR TITLE [posted on 23-Aug-2010]

In what was an epic battle for honours at Royal Harare Golf Club, it was Vincent who emerged with flying colours – even outshining the much fancied South Africans who had come in to add spice to the tournament.

After a laboured start in which he managed a 73 and 74 in his first two rounds, Vincent came back a changed man in the third round, posting a 69 to close the gap on the leaders. That set up a gripping final round with the top four golfers within two shots of each other. But Vincent, undeterred by the looming threat from the trio of Dumi Chitengwa, G. van der Merwe and L. Taylor, raced clear, closing with another 69. And with the chasing trio struggling to keep their scores low, Vincent duly secured a convincing win with a 3-under-285 total. For Vincent, it was double celebration as the victory also made him the outright winner of the Eisenhower Trophy race.

Borrowdale Brooke-based Greg Bentley, whose third round 75 effectively ended his title chances, recovered with a final round 72 to finish in a tie for second place with South Africa’s G. van der Merwe on 4-over-par 292. Bentley had scores of 73 and 72 in the first two rounds while van der Merwe had rounds of 72, 74, 72 and 74.

Former junior national team player, Dumi Chitengwa, who was actually the joint leader with Vincent going into the final round, finished a credible fourth on 5-over-par 293. Chitengwa had rounds of 72, 73, 71 and 77. The South African trio of L. Taylor (74, 73, 71, 77), H. Hughes (77, 75, 72, 72) and G. Vrugtman (74, 71, 80, 72) finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Stephen Ferreira, a member of the Zimbabwe junior team that won the Tri-Nations Junior championship last year was eighth on 10-over-par 298 after rounds of 73, 78, 74 and 73. Chapman golfer, Rogers Jack was a shot back in ninth position following rounds of 73, 74, 77 and 75. Scott Ferguson (73, 78, 76, 74), Dale Howie (78, 78, 71, 74) and Nyasha Muyambo (76, 80, 75, 70) tied for 10th position on 13-over-par 301.

The successful conclusion of the FBC Zimbabwe Amateur championship also marked the conclusion of the Eisenhower Trophy qualification series with Vincent, Jack and Muyambo emerging as the top three finishers on the rankings. As a result, the trio will be the country’s representatives in the biannual World Amateur Golf Team Championship, also known as the Eisenhower Trophy, which will be held in Argentina in October.
